Pinglu Canal Opening

China has officially opened the 134-kilometer Pinglu Canal. This Pinglu Canal is a milestone for Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Pinglu Canal will shorten shipping distances, for the southwest inland provinces. Will help trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN. Pinglu Canal Opening

The megaproject connects the Xijiang River network directly to the Gulf of Tonkin at Qinzhou Port. By bypassing traditional, longer eastern river routes through Guangdong and Hong Kong, the canal shortens inland shipping routes to the sea by up to 560 kilometers. Transport authorities estimate the waterway will reduce logisitics costs by billions of yuan annually while diverting heavy freight from regional highway networks.

Built with an investment exceeding $10 billion, the Pinglu Canal features advanced dual-track shipping locks capable of handling 5,000-ton cargo vessels. Chinese officials emphasized that the waterway serves as a critical leg of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, dramatically enhancing trade efficiency with key ASEAN partners like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore amid growing regional economic integration.

Regional trade analysts note that the opening of the strategic canal solidifies China’s southwestern logistics hub, offering lower transport overheads for bulk commodities, agricultural goods, and industrial equipment bound for Southeast Asia and broader international maritime markets. UAE Echo
