The United Arab Emirates has officially suspended all commercial exchange, trade activities, and financial transactions with Iran until further notice, marking a sharp fracture in economic relations following targeted missile strikes off the UAE coast.

In an official statement delivered via state news agency WAM, Afra Al Hameli, Director of Strategic Communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), affirmed that the sweeping suspension was enacted “in light of regional escalations that undermine regional and international peace and security.” She emphasized that Abu Dhabi remains firmly committed to safeguarding the integrity of the international financial system in accordance with international legal standards.

The decision was triggered after the UAE Ministry of Defense detected two Iranian ballistic missiles launched toward Emirati territory, targeting maritime navigation pathways. Air defense systems tracked the projectiles, with one missile landing inside UAE territorial waters and a second impacting outside. The incident prompted emergency alerts across coastal zones and represented a major escalation along vital commercial shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz.

The economic freeze reverses months of delicate diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing bilateral trade ties between Abu Dhabi and Tehran. As one of Iran’s foremost commercial partners and re-export hubs, the total halt in banking clearance, currency exchanges, and port shipping is expected to deliver a severe blow to cross-border logistics and Iranian import channels.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei issued a statement denying involvement in the missile launches, labeling the accusations unfounded. However, Emirati officials reiterated that the UAE will enforce strict oversight across its financial and maritime sectors to protect national security and international trade infrastructure.
