Dubai has announced the version of its $1 million Global Water Award. This award is asking researchers, inventors and people who create technology from over the world to send in artificial intelligence ideas. These ideas should focus on making water use more sustainable. The goal is to solve water problems, around the world.

The initiative seeks to accelerate the development of advanced technologies that can enhance water production, distribution, management and conservation. Organisers said the award is designed to encourage innovation in areas such as desalination, water quality monitoring, leak detection, resource optimisation and energy-efficient water systems through the use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

The competition forms part of Dubai’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable development and supporting scientific research that addresses pressing environmental issues. Officials said AI has the potential to transform water management by enabling faster data analysis, predictive maintenance, smarter infrastructure and more efficient use of limited water resources.

Participants from universities, research institutions, start-ups and established companies are expected to compete across multiple categories, with winning projects selected based on their innovation, technical feasibility, scalability and potential impact. The award also aims to encourage international collaboration in developing practical solutions that can be implemented in regions facing water scarcity.

Water security remains a strategic priority for countries across the Middle East, where growing populations, climate change and limited freshwater resources continue to increase demand for sustainable water technologies. Experts believe AI can play an increasingly important role in improving operational efficiency, reducing waste and strengthening long-term resilience in the water sector.

Dubai has invested significantly in smart infrastructure and clean technology as part of its sustainability agenda, with initiatives supporting renewable energy, digital transformation and environmental innovation. The Global Water Award complements these efforts by recognising projects capable of delivering measurable benefits for communities worldwide.

Officials said the competition reflects Dubai’s ambition to position itself as a global hub for innovation while contributing to international efforts to address water-related challenges. Successful projects could help shape the future of water management by combining artificial intelligence with practical engineering solutions to improve access, efficiency and sustainability.
