The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in coordination with local authorities, has temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain following an offshore oil spill from a marine tanker.
The oil slick was detected by the country’s technical monitoring and environmental assessment systems. Prompted by the detection, joint federal and municipal response teams immediately launched containment, cordoning, and remediation operations along affected shoreline stretches to prevent further spreading into sensitive marine habitats. The announcement follows several days of widespread reports from residents in Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain regarding distinct fuel-like odors in the air. Authorities reassured the public that the airborne odors pose no health risks.
Precautionary coastal surveys and environmental evaluations remain ongoing to measure the ecological impact and establish long-term protection protocols for regional marine life. Beaches will remain closed to the public until specialized cleanup crews finalize safety measures and clear the coastal areas.
