People who like astronomy and looking at the stars got together in the desert in the United Arab Emirates at night. They were there to see the Perseid meteor shower. It was really something to see. The Perseid meteor shower was amazing. People saw a lot of shooting stars. Up to 100 Perseid meteor shower shooting stars, in one hour.

The 2026 cosmic phenomenon, which reached its peak from late Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday morning, provided exceptional viewing conditions owing to a rare alignment with a new moon. With lunar illumination virtually absent, inky black desert skies allowed faint light trails and high-speed fireballs to remain sharply visible across the horizon.

Organized skywatching events drew crowds to prime dark-sky destinations, including Abu Dhabi’s Al Khatim Desert and Al Quaa, Sharjah’s Mleiha World Heritage Site, and Dubai’s Al Marmoom Reserve. Hosted by the Dubai Astronomy Group, main observation sessions combined guided constellation mapping with live telescope views of a rare planetary alignment featuring Saturn and Mars. Attendees gathered on desert dunes, watching without optical aid as meteors flashed toward the northeast from the constellation Perseus.

The Perseids occur annually when Earth passes through the orbital debris cloud left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, a massive icy body orbiting the sun once every 133 years. As small ice and dust particles enter Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds exceeding 59 kilometers per second, atmospheric friction causes them to burn up, producing glowing streaks of incandescent gas visible from the ground.

Astronomers noted that this year offered the clearest viewing window for the Perseids since 2018. The combination of zero moonlight interference, clear atmospheric conditions, and organized community gatherings made the event one of the most widely attended stargazing spectacles in the country this year.
